I enjoy speculative fiction stories with a supernatural twist and couldn’t pass this novel up when I read its premise. I was at first beguiled then frightened while reading the atmospheric and spooky prologue of Gills. Ravenous mermaids with glowing eyes and a hunger for mortal flesh? I was hooked!This tale is much more than another mermaid yarn. Without revealing too much backstory, it is a tale of two sisters, who happen to be worlds apart physically and emotionally. I was pleasantly surprised that Georgia and Sam (the two sisters) were such strong female characters. For me this Is most always refreshing to see in modern storytelling. Several other characters in this book were intriguing, a few were loathsome by design, yet all were fleshed out and relatable. Believable. This novella is fast paced, engaging, and enjoyable from the beginning until the end.The mythological portion of the story was inventive and entertaining. It stands out among other modern mermaid tales mainly because of this creativity. But GILLS is also distinctive due to the strength of its characters. The best monster stories are the ones where the focus is upon the people; their trials, tribulations, and struggles against their foes -and sometimes themselves. This is one such story. While I didn’t find it especially terrifying, I relished the suspense and many unforeseeable plot twists. In my opinion, GILLS is a well written addition to the horror/speculative fiction genre. This thought-provoking tale ranks as one of the best supernatural-themed novellas I’ve ever read. Highly, highly, recommend this book and this author. Can’t wait to read his other novels! I love creature books. Usually you spend the first half eagerly anticipating the big reveal and it's a toss up whether or not you're going to like it. This book though, disappointed me very early on. It started out well enough but the author drops all pretense of mystery and suspense in the first few chapters. What follows is kind of boring and more lengthy than it needs to be. His writing is very discrptive and visceral which is good but his monsters are lame, the main villian is a bad Lovecraft knock off, and the ending left me a little confused. There are also a few unnecessary characters who don't serve any real purpose. This story would have been better if it were trimmed down to the length of a novella and all the filler taken out, leaving just the gnashing teeth and bloody surf.
